15:1-11) / Faith in the Resurrection

The resurrection of Jesus was an event in the past.

This past event is the basis of our faith today.

This present faith becomes the basis of faith for our future resurrection.

Therefore, faith in the resurrection is simultaneously a past, present and future belief.

If kidney bean seeds are kept for over 3 years without sprouting, the bud becomes almost useless.

However, there are other seeds that can be kept for a much longer time before they die.

As archeologists excavated an ancient Egyptian pyramid from 3000 years ago, they discovered what seemed to be wheat seeds.

Archaeologists and botanists planted the wheat seeds to see if they would sprout.

To their astonishment, these 3000 year old seeds did sprout.

This phenomenon is attributed to the ingenious architectural design of the ancient pyramid.

Therefore if seeds are able to sprout after 3000 years because of a man-made design, it is easy to believe that God can raise people, who He created, from the dead.

Let us examine the origin of the word “resurrection.”

The Greek word for resurrection is άνάστσις which has three meanings: (1) resurrection, (2) standing up; (3) recovery

Therefore, you can explain the resurrection by άνάστσις in three ways.

Today’s message comes from one of Paul’s letters. If you had to extract the most important message out of all the Pauline epistles, it would be 1 Corinthians 13 and 1 Corinthians 15. Chapter 13 is a message about love and chapter 15 is a message about the resurrection.

For today’s passage, I will read 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

According to the Scriptures, Jesus was raised from the dead. This was no coincidence, rather, a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.

Verses 3 and 4 says that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

Therefore, Jesus’ resurrection is the standard set by Scripture

The Apostles’ Creed states that he “was crucified, dead, and buried...the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and dead...”

This is an example of additional evidence that Jesus’ resurrection is the standard.

Now I will discuss the nature of the resurrection.

First, the resurrection body is not bound by physical limitations (John 20:19-23)

Upon hearing the news about Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples gathered together and locked the doors out of fear of the Jewish leaders. Then Jesus appeared in the place where they were gathered.

Verse 19 says, “On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

Unless you open locked doors, people cannot enter. However, the body of the resurrected Jesus was able to enter despite the locked doors. This is what it means to have a resurrected body. A resurrected body is not bound by physical limitations.

Why would he say “peace?”

It was because the disciples were frightened by seeing someone freely enter through locked doors. They must have wondered how this was possible. So it is understandable that they were frightened. That is why Jesus’ message to them was “peace be with you.”

Second, the resurrection body consists of the flesh

When Jesus appeared in the place where the disciples were gathered, Thomas was not there. The disciples who saw the resurrected Jesus were bragging to Thomas that they had seen the Lord.

Thomas replied by saying, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe” (John 20:25)

A week later the disciples were gathered in the house again with the doors locked, this time with Thomas. Jesus appeared again and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

When Jesus walks through locked doors and tells Thomas to touch his hands and his side, it teaches us that the resurrected body is not bound by physical limitations and also consists of the flesh.

In another instance, Peter was up all night trying to catch fish without any success. Jesus appeared and told him to throw the net on the right side of the boat. When Peter did this, they caught so much fish that they were unable to haul the net. After this, Jesus and the disciples ate the fish as breakfast together.

John 21:12-13 says, “Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

The ability to eat is evidence that the resurrection body consists of the flesh.

Third, the resurrection body ascends into heaven.

The resurrected Jesus remained in the world for another 40 days. Then, while many were present to witness it, he ascended into heaven.

Acts 1:9 says, “After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

If someone is to fly into the sky, there must be a mechanism for him to do so. Jesus didn’t need such mechanism because his resurrected body was able to do so.

In summary, the resurrected Jesus entered through locked doors to where the disciples were gathered.

The resurrected Jesus had nail marks on his body and also ate breakfast with his disciples.

Finally, the resurrected Jesus ascended into the sky. Before he ascended, however, he said 3 things.

First, believe in the resurrection. “Stop doubting and believe” (John 20:27)

How can we believe?

John 20:29 says, “Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”

Second, be a witness of the resurrection.

Matthew 28:19-20 says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

To have faith in the resurrection means to share the gospel with others so that they may be baptized and participate in the blessings of Jesus’ resurrection.

Third, receive the Holy Spirit

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth

Beloved brothers and sisters of Unity and the Church of the Nazarene!

What Jesus tells us in his resurrection is for us to believe in it and to be a witness of it.

First, we do this by praying about the resurrection.

Second, by showing our faith in Jesus’ resurrection and our future resurrection.

We must walk and live in a way that is consistent with our faith in the resurrection.

Third, we must pray for evangelists and missionaries who take the message of the resurrection to lost people. We must assist them financially. If we ourselves are unable to go, we must assist those who do go.
